Re-putting Our Hope in God's Steadfast Love

His delight is not in the strength of the horse, nor his delight in the legs of a man, but the Lord takes pleasure in those who fear him, in those who hope in his steadfast lovePs. 147:10-11

Heavenly Father, once again we come before you as repeat offenders--as those who suffer from doxological dementia, grace amnesia--gospel forgetfulness.

Why is it, when feeling discouraged by circumstances, weighed down with our brokenness, or disheartened by unexpected news... why do we still default to putting our trust in "horses or chariots" (Psalm 20:7) or the "legs of men," broken cisterns or worthless idols? No horizontal remedy can match the vertical riches we have in Jesus.

So instead of trying to figure things out or be our own savior, act like Fatherless orphans or give into despair, look for someone to blame or some place to run... we declare--as this day begins and continues, that our hope is in your steadfast, unwavering, endless, more-than-sufficient, peace-giving love.

You aren't an impotent, disengaged god; you are our Almighty, sovereign Father--at work in all things for our good and your glory. Things are not as they appear to our naked eye. From your occupied throne and grace-full heart, you are writing stories, working your plan, and redeeming messes in ways we just don't see... yet.

Indeed, our hope is in your steadfast love, not in our resolve to do a better job. Our hope is in your steadfast love, not in attempts to make up for our failures, blunders, and sins. Our hope is in your steadfast love, not in circumstances that will be less than steadfast until Jesus returns. We look to you to still our restless, wandering hearts, Abba, Father. So very Amen we pray, in Jesus’ most wonderful and merciful name.
