As we continue to emphasize our theme of prayer this year, we will take the summer months to focus on prayers of confession. There are two types of confession and thus two Psalms we will commit to memory: Confessing our sin (Psalm 51:1-2) and confessing our lament (Psalm 13:1-2).
Confessing our sin is saying the same thing God says about our sin. We naturally do not like to admit we are wrong. But, as Christians, it is good for us to humble ourselves before God and confess where we have sinned in thought, word, or deed. We have the promise of God that when we do so, we will experience His forgiveness (1 John 1:9).
Confessing our laments to God is admitting the reality of living in a broken world while clinging to the goodness of God. This is not to be confused with complaining to God. Rather, these are prayers of faith in the midst of struggle.
